West Palm Beach is poised to unveil a significant upgrade to its community facilities with the opening of the revamped Coleman Park Community Center and the brand-new Paul G. Blackshear Gymnasium, inviting residents to join the ribbon cutting on November 1. A statement from the City of West Palm Beach indicates celebrations are set for 10:30 a.m. at 1116 21st Street, where public officials and the community will gather to mark this new chapter for the historic neighborhood.

The project's completion is the culmination of a sizable financial endeavor, the funds for which were sourced through the 2020 Parks Bond contributing $1.2 million, the Penny Sales Tax supplying an additional $3.4 million, and the Capital Acquisition Fund adding $100,000, cumulatively totaling a $4.7 million investment; this includes the Coleman Park Community Center overhaul and the construction of the Paul G. Blackshear Gymnasium. Acknowledging the efforts that brought this project to fruition, Mayor Keith A. James said, "Coleman Park is part of the fabric of our city’s history,” adding that "These new facilities reflect our continued investment in the people of West Palm Beach and our belief that every resident deserves access to beautiful, functional, and safe public spaces that build community and pride," as quoted by the City's announcement.

Further complementing the neighborhood's recreational offerings, an additional $350,000 from the 2020 Parks Bond funded new playgrounds and a picnic pavilion to the area's charm. The Paul G. Blackshear Gymnasium stands as a testament to its namesake, a cherished local Parks and Recreation employee and community advocate whose influence resonates with the establishment of this eponymous facility.

The event will feature a ribbon-cutting and community festival led by Mayor Keith A. James, followed by a city-sponsored celebration with music, storytelling, and family activities. Organized by REG Architects, All-Site Construction, JRawn Enterprises, Rep Services, Inc., and the Parks and Recreation Advisory Committee, the project highlights collaboration between the City’s Parks and Recreation and Engineering departments to strengthen community ties in Coleman Park and beyond.
