As the city prepares to observe the second Monday of October, West Palm Beach residents are reminded that City Hall, along with other municipal entities like the Mandel Public Library and the Grassy Waters Preserve Nature Center, will not be open on October 13. This closure comes as the city observes a dual holiday, recognizing both Columbus Day and Indigenous Peoples' Day. A note for locals planning their day: waste collection services will continue without interruption.

In an announcement made by the City of West Palm Beach, operational hours for the public facilities following the holiday were specified. City Hall and the Grassy Waters Conservation area are set to resume services at 8 a.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 14, while the Mandel Public Library will open its doors at 9:30 a.m. the following morning.

The commemoration of Indigenous Peoples' Day alongside Columbus Day represents a convergence of history and recognition of past and present narratives. According to a City of West Palm Beach statement, Indigenous Peoples' Day was initially proposed in 1977 by Native Nations at the International Conference on Discrimination Against Indigenous Populations of the Americas. It marks a day to honor the history, culture, and resilience of native communities against centuries of colonization and marginalization.
