The Worcester Police Department has launched a six-month pilot program to test steady blue lights on patrol vehicles to improve visibility and potentially deter crime. According to Boston 25 News, the program began yesterday morning and equips cruisers with a steady blue cruise light system to indicate police presence during regular patrols.

Police Chief Paul Saucier said the blue lights are meant to remind drivers that officers are nearby and encourage lawful driving. He added that the lights are part of efforts to enhance visibility and support traffic safety. The department clarified that drivers are only required to pull over when they see flashing lights and hear sirens, not when the steady blue light is on.

WCVB reported that City Manager Eric Batista described the initiative as part of broader public safety efforts, including lowering the city’s speed limit to 25 mph, installing speed humps, and expanding park-and-walk patrols.

At the end of the six-month trial, Worcester Police and city officials will evaluate the program’s impact on public safety and gather community feedback to determine whether to make the blue light system permanent.
