Governor Kathy Hochul recently announced the completion of an $11.4 million infrastructure upgrade along State Route 376 in Dutchess County. The project features a new roundabout at the intersection of Raymond Avenue and Hooker Avenue, aimed at improving traffic safety and flow near Vassar College and the Arlington business district, according to an official announcement.
“Thanks to this new roundabout on State Route 376, students and faculty will have a safer way of getting to class at Vassar College and local residents and visitors will experience fewer hassles as they drive, bike, walk or ride public transit in the area,” Governor Hochul said in an official announcement, noting the project’s expected benefits for safety and traffic flow. New York State Department of Transportation Commissioner Marie Therese Dominguez shared similar remarks, describing the project as a reflection of Governor Hochul’s commitment to community-focused infrastructure investments that promote safer and more reliable connectivity.
The project was developed as a collaborative effort that included input from Vassar College officials and community stakeholders to ensure the roundabout meets broader local needs. In addition to improving traffic flow, the design also accommodates pedestrians and cyclists with new sidewalks, crosswalks, and a connection to the college’s pedestrian path.
In an official announcement, State Senator Robert Rolison highlighted the project’s impact, stating, “This project is a major win for the Town of Poughkeepsie and the Arlington business district. This new roundabout not only makes these busy roads safer for drivers, cyclists and pedestrians, but has improved travel across Dutchess County, to one of our higher education institutions, ecological preserves and many small businesses.” Completed in the spring of 2024, the roundabout also includes native tree plantings and perennial plants as part of its design improvements.
The new roundabout also offers environmental and efficiency benefits, including reduced vehicle idling and the removal of electric-powered traffic signals that were part of the previous intersection.
