Over the weekend, tension arose outside of the Krome Detention Center in Miami-Dade, where 31 individuals were detained during a protest. According to the Miami-Dade Sheriff's Office, the situation escalated after protesters obstructed the entrance and declined to comply with multiple requests to vacate the premises, as reported by NBC Miami.
Members of the Sunrise Movement, identifiable by their "ICE kidnapped my neighbor" shirts, were among the arrested. They have voiced their opposition to what they describe as the inhumane conditions within immigration detention centers. Kidus Girma, associated with the protest, expressed to NBC Miami after being released, "Everyone deserves to make it home at the end of the day. Children deserve to see their parents come home."
In videos from the scene, participants communicated their reasons for protesting, with one stating, "I am being arrested for protesting the horrible treatment of human beings by ICE agents," highlighting the gravity of the situation. The response from law enforcement was just as clear, as an officer can be seen stating, "It’s called obstruction, obstruction of justice," as noted by NBC Miami.
The incendiary rhetoric was heightened on social media, where a post detailed the arrest of "30 brave young people" for blocking the detention center, also referred to as "Alligator Alcatraz." The post, featured on Instagram, condemned ICE as "a criminal organization" accused of terrorizing communities and called for a collective stand against its operations. The young demonstrators made clear their demands: the shuttering of ICE facilities, the return of their neighbors, and the outright abolition of ICE.
Nonetheless, the sheriff's office maintained that while they fully support the right to peaceful expression, they must also ensure public safety and access to critical facilities. Hence, as repeated dispersal orders went unheeded, arrests were made for trespassing. It was also reported that a journalist documenting the demonstrations was arrested. According to the NBC Miami coverage, no injuries occurred during the incident.
