The web of deceit woven by one Ousman Camara has caught the eye of Federal investigators, as he becomes the 77th defendant in the expansive Feeding Our Future fraud case. At 45 years of age, Camara stands accused of wire fraud, federal programs bribery, and money laundering, per a nine-count indictment. These charges were announced by U.S. Attorney Daniel N. Rosen, as the case continues to unfold as the country's largest identified COVID-19 fraud scheme.
Previously disqualified from the SNAP program in 2015 due to fraudulent activities, Camara did not relinquish his pursuit of illicit gain. Instead, in September of 2020, he reentered the fray under the guise of K's Grocery, securing a place in the Federal Child Nutrition Program through Feeding Our Future's sponsorship. It was during the years 2020 and 2021 that he boldly claimed to be serving meals to a thousand children daily, amounting to over 300,000 meals and bringing in over $1 million in reimbursement funds—an entitlement he claimed but never fulfilled.
According to the U.S. Attorney's Office, the funds Camara extracted from the Federal Child Nutrition Program did not translate into sustenance for children. Rather than nourishing the youth, the money was directed towards his personal expenses, real estate acquisitions, and was even wired overseas, with sums surpassing $100,000. Camara's financial maneuverings also involved kickbacks, amounting to roughly $87,000, to a Feeding Our Future employee who facilitated his fraudulent claims.
The gravity of these transgressions, however, is not relegated to the indictment alone. The case against Camara is the culmination of joint investigative efforts by the FBI, the U.S. Postal Inspection Service, and the IRS Criminal Investigation unit. Assistant U.S. Attorneys Joseph H. Thompson, Harry M. Jacobs, and Daniel W. Bobier have taken up the prosecutorial mantle in this matter. As the legal gears turn, it is essential to remember that an indictment, even for the 77th defendant, is merely an allegation.
