A tragic incident unfolded on Monday evening in Jefferson Parish when 79-year-old Phillip Harris of Harahan was fatally struck by a vehicle while crossing LA 48, also known as Jefferson Highway. According to a press release from the Louisiana State Police, the incident occurred near the intersection with Labarre Road.
The collision involved a 2007 Toyota Tundra which was traveling south on the highway, Harris, for reasons still unclear, stepped onto the pedestrian crosswalk and was hit by the approaching Toyota leaving the authorities to piece together the sequence that led to this misfortune, the driver had the green light, and the specificity of whether Harris entered prematurely or the driver failed to notice him remains the subject of ongoing investigation, as mentioned on the same press release of the Louisiana State Police.
Harris suffered serious injuries in the crash and was taken to a local hospital, where he later died. State troopers said their investigation is ongoing, and toxicology tests are being conducted to determine if impairment was a factor, according to the Louisiana State Police.
