Governor Kathy Hochul announced progress in the $100 million renovation of Albany International Airport. The project includes upgrades aimed at improving the passenger experience, such as a new business center, a children’s play area, and a multi-sensory room designed for individuals with sensory processing needs, according to the Governor’s office.
"The completion of these milestones marks an important stage for Albany International Airport and the entire Capital Region," Governor Hochul said in an official statement. The airport modernization includes facilities designed to accommodate families, business travelers, and international visitors.
Funding of $60 million from the Governor's Upstate Airport Economic Development and Revitalization Competition has supported renovations at Albany International Airport, alongside contributions from federal and local sources. New York State Department of Transportation Commissioner Marie Therese Dominguez noted the benefits to travelers and the potential economic impact of these investments. "Here and across the state, the Governor’s Upstate Airport Economic Development and Revitalization Competition is enhancing the passenger experience and lifting regional and statewide economies to new heights," Dominguez stated in an official announcement.
The new children's play area, named the Adirondack Imaginarium, incorporates elements of local art and culture. It includes hands-on play features and educational activities that reflect the region's natural environment and cultural heritage. Visitors can explore an Eagle's Nest play structure and interact with a game illustrating the life cycle of a bald eagle. The sensory room provides a quiet space for travelers, accommodating children and adults with different sensory sensitivities.
In addition to state funding, the airport's renovation has received federal support through the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act and the American Rescue Plan Act. Senators Charles Schumer and Kirsten Gillibrand commented on the improvements and the use of federal funds. Schumer referred to the airport as a gateway for commerce and tourism, while Gillibrand noted its role in supporting travel in the state capital.
As the project advances, future plans include upgrades to the ticketing area, an expanded TSA queuing space, and additional amenities designed to support travelers. The development is expected to continue through early 2027, maintaining Albany International Airport’s role as a transportation hub in Upstate New York.
Local leaders, including State Senator Patricia Fahy and Assembly members John T. McDonald III and Gabriella A. Romero, have commented on the airport's recent developments. They noted that the renovated spaces are designed to accommodate a variety of traveler needs. Albany County Executive Daniel P. McCoy and Albany County Airport Authority Chair Sam Fresina have also acknowledged the progress, indicating broad support for the airport's transformation across the Capital Region.
