An Albany, Georgia woman has been arrested and charged in the death of her infant, authorities said. Nyla Simmons, 22, faces one count of Second Degree Cruelty to Children and one count of Second Degree Murder. The Georgia Bureau of Investigation (GBI) took her into custody on Monday, following a request from the Lee County Sheriff’s Office to look into the child's death, which occurred in October.
Responding to an emergency call, deputies arrived at a local hospital in Albany where the seven-month-old had been pronounced dead on October 16. According to the GBI press release, the child was initially taken to the hospital from a Kia Automotive Dealership in Albany. Simmons, identified as the mother and a suspect, was arrested at the Lee County Sheriff’s Office.
Simmons is currently booked at Lee County Jail, waiting for the legal proceedings to move forward. The investigation remains active, and authorities are urging anyone with information to step forward. The GBI can be reached at their Regional Investigative Office in Americus, and the Lee County Sheriff’s Office is also accepting tips related to the case. The GBI's official statement encourages anonymous tip submission via phone, their website, or through their mobile app.
The GBI has not yet released details regarding the circumstances of the infant's death, with further information pending upon the completion of their investigation. Once the case file is completed, it will be turned over to the Southwestern Judicial Circuit District Attorney's Office for prosecution.
