Bay Area residents can expect a mix of weather conditions this week as forecasters predict more rainfall followed by a dry spell. According to the National Weather Service in San Francisco, a cold front brought rain to the region on Wednesday evening, which then spread south overnight. "Rainfall amounts over the last six hours has generally been a few hundredths to a few tenths," the NWS San Francisco indicated, suggesting a relatively mild downpour. The heaviest rain hit Wednesday night into Thursday morning, with accumulations generally staying below half an inch.
As we make our way into the weekend, however, a respite is in sight. The same source reports that the Bay Area is expected to experience dry weather returning on Friday, with conditions continuing through the weekend. This break comes as a boon for those planning outdoor activities, although the lingering effects of earlier rains may still warrant some caution, especially on wet roads.
Beachgoers and coastal dwellers, however, should heed warnings of potentially dangerous conditions. A Beach Hazards Statement will take effect from Thursday afternoon through Monday evening. The increased risk for sneaker waves and rip currents is notable. The statement details that breaking waves could reach between 13 and 18 feet. "Never turn your back on the ocean!" the NWS San Francisco cautions.
Inland, following the rain, there might be other concerns. "Depending upon the amount of clearing tonight with decreasing winds, fog could be an issue over the inland valleys," NWS San Francisco outlined. This fog could significantly impact visibility, possibly affecting the Friday morning commute.
For those heading out to sea, mariners are advised to be cautious as well. The NWS San Francisco's Marine section warns of hazardous conditions that began this morning and will extend through the weekend due to a combination of light rain and moderate to strong winds. "Seas build to 10 to 15 feet Thursday and remain elevated into early next week," warns the NWS San Francisco. Sufficient preparation and an awareness of the environment are advised for anyone venturing into these marine areas.
The Bay Area's airports have also experienced mixed conditions. According to the NWS San Francisco's Aviation update, airports have experienced a range of MVFR to VFR conditions, with some sites experiencing IFR conditions due to moderate rain affecting visibility. "Mix of MVFR and VFR conditions across the board with sites temporarily dropping to IFR as moderate rain moves directly over airports," the Aviation report details. Rain showers were expected to continue through early afternoon before giving way to drier skies.
