The City Council has approved a resolution supporting a partnership between the City of Boston and the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) to improve flood resilience. The resolution calls for Boston to seek certification in FEMA’s National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP) and Community Rating System (CRS), according to the City of Boston’s official website.
Neighborhoods such as Charlestown and the South Boston Waterfront face increasing flood risks from sea level rise and heavy precipitation. Participation in the CRS program could provide Boston residents with discounts on flood insurance premiums, potentially up to 20 percent. The NFIP offers coverage for property owners, renters, and businesses against flood-related losses.
The Council’s resolution aims to reduce insurance costs for residents in flood-prone areas and strengthen the city’s preparedness for flooding. Achieving CRS certification would provide financial relief and enhance flood protection measures across Boston.
