The City of Brentwood announced the upcoming grand opening of its 15th park, Windy Hill Park, scheduled for December 13, as part of its Brentwood 2030 plan. The event, which will include a ribbon-cutting ceremony, is set to begin at 10 a.m. at the park's main entrance at 9133 Old Smyrna Road, as confirmed by City Commissioner Kim Gawrys during a commission meeting. Gawrys expressed hope for favorable weather for the occasion.
Windy Hill Park, spreading over 52 acres, will cater to the recreational needs of more than 1,900 homes and residents in the northern part of Brentwood. Previously, a flat field in the expanse served as a runway for Wilbur Sensing's single-engine airplane. In a gesture melding past with present, the park's design includes an airplane-themed playground and a building mural that pays homage to the land's former life, according to a statement released by the Sensings when they sold the land to the city in 2020. They shared their joy in knowing that "the pastoral beauty of Windy Hill" they had cherished over 45 years, would be preserved for communal enjoyment, the City of Brentwood mentioned.
The park's features are vast and varied, with amenities including walking trails connected to existing greenways, a 400-meter loop track, workout stations, and picnic shelters. Artist Eric "Mobe" Bass is on board to paint the mural depicting one of Sensing’s former planes. Moreover, the park will have conveniently placed restrooms and parking areas at both the north and south entrances.
