A tragic occurrence unfolded in Carrollton as a mother of three, Lareon "Lay Lay" Brown, age 26, was fatally shot early Sunday. The incident, which resulted in her death, also wounded two others, including Brown's cousin, Kathy Cheeks. As reported by FOX 5 Atlanta, the chaos erupted on Sixth Street, where Brown, who had earlier been celebrating her child’s birthday, was found deceased at the scene. According to family, she was not involved in the argument that escalated into gunfire.
Three men have been apprehended and charged in connection with the shooting—Cyntez Worthy, Jamine Hutchinson, and Zontavius Vaughn. They are facing charges including murder, aggravated assault, and possession of a firearm during the commission of a crime. As Live 5 News reported, Cheeks is left grappling with a bullet still lodged in her leg, with no answers as to who took her sister’s life. Family members have emphasized that neither Brown nor Cheeks were actively involved in the altercation.
Brown's loss was deeply felt by her loved ones who considered her as the "rock" of the family and a beacon of joy with a "million-dollar smile." "She was nowhere in the mix of anybody’s drama," Lareon Brown's mother, Qualeshas Lowery, told FOX 5 Atlanta. "She was just amazing," added her cousin Kathy Cheeks, who also described Brown as the organizer of family events. The family is currently focused on funeral arrangements and, later on, will turn to seeking justice.
Further details about the triple shooting are yet to be disclosed by the authorities. The investigation is ongoing, and it remains to be revealed exactly how the suspects were connected to the victims. "After I put my baby to rest, that’s what I’m going to work on," Qualeshas Lowery shared with FOX 5 Atlanta.
