A Chandler neighbor tried to stop a car break-in last Friday by using his vehicle’s lights and horn. Two teenage suspects ran off, and the older teen fired several shots at the neighbor’s Tesla. Police from multiple agencies responded with officers, canine units, drones, and a helicopter. The teens were arrested about 90 minutes later, and one had discarded a Ruger Security 9mm handgun nearby, according to ABC15.
The situation escalated when the man followed the suspects after they first ran away. As reported by 12News, one of the teens turned and fired eight shots at his car, hitting it three times. The man was not injured and was able to report the incident to police.
A Chandler neighborhood was disrupted by gunfire, with a resident saying, "We were just watching Netflix, hanging out, me and my wife and the newborn, and our dog went crazy. We knew it was gunshots. Something like that does not happen around here — never," as per 12News. The next day, he found a dropped gun and the suspects’ backpacks and reported them to police. One suspect, who previously faced a robbery charge in California, is now charged as an adult with aggravated assault with a deadly weapon and attempted burglary. The Chandler Police Department has reported that investigators have recovered 74 firearms this year.
