The Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department recently had a bit of a win in the fight against retail theft. According to a social media post by the department, their University City Division spearheaded an Organized Retail Crime Operation at Belgate Shopping Center, roping in reinforcements from their Providence Division, the Organized Retail Crime Unit, and Asset Protection Officers from stores like TJ Maxx, Old Navy, and Marshalls.
The collective effort was worth the investment, pulling in over $1,100 of recovered stolen goods and queuing up multiple suspects for organized retail crime charges. Local businesses, often on the front line of such theft, welcomed this successful operation. With shrinkage—a retail term for loss of inventory due to theft, error, or fraud—being a persistent pain for retailers, operations like this represent a serious effort to ward off the damage it inflicts on both profitability and consumer prices. "Thanks to the teamwork of all involved," the police department's post expressed an appreciation of the collective drive.
