Concord, well known for its vibrant racing scene, has chosen a figure emblematic of this heritage to lead its 97th Christmas parade. Greg Walter, at the wheel of Charlotte Motor Speedway as President and General Manager, has been named Grand Marshal for the upcoming event next Saturday. Recognized for steering not only the speedway but also community initiatives, his role as Grand Marshal honors his enduring contributions on and off the track.
The impact of Walter's leadership can be measured both in lap times and community engagement. To rapidly innovate and keep the motor speedway at the forefront of the racing world, his strategies have maintained the venue's reputation as a prime travel destination in Concord, drawing in crowds and uplifting the local economy. According to the City of Concord, the speedway's activities have a staggering $450 million annual regional economic impact.
However, the allure of Greg Walter's management extends further than mere profits and podiums. His initiatives, via the speedway, to engage the community with a focus on educating and inspiring through Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics (STEAM) programs reflect a desire to promptly contribute to shaping future minds. The speedway has also become a community hub, serving as a venue for various events, including holiday celebrations and community support during crises such as natural disasters and pandemics.
Throughout his tenure, Walter has proven to seamlessly integrate the speedway into the fabric of the community. When disaster struck, from hurricanes to a global health crisis, the speedway opened its arms, providing refuge, drive-thru vaccine clinics, and even alternate venues for graduation ceremonies for high school seniors to safely celebrate their milestones. As reported by the City of Concord, these acts of service have been hallmarks of Walter's compassionate leadership. The parade, set to start at 2:30 p.m. at the intersection of Church Street and Lake Concord Road, will see Walter lead the procession through the heart of Concord.
