The arts and culture scene in Charlotte just received a significant boost with the City's announcement of this year's Creative Growth Grants. As part of ongoing efforts to uplift local creators, today, the City of Charlotte disclosed the recipients of a combined $1.723 million in funding. According to the official press release, 106 artists and art organizations from various disciplines were chosen to receive support intended to help sustain and grow the city's burgeoning artistic landscape.
The grants, administered in partnership with Charlotte Is Creative, were awarded out of a pool of 272 applications, underlining the strong presence of local artists and art groups keen on shaping the Queen City's cultural fabric. Mayor Vi Lyles expressed the city's dedication to the arts, stating “These grants are reflective of the city's ongoing and eager support of Charlotte's creative community,” in a statement provided by the city's news release. The mayor added their commitment toward "fueling the creativity that exists in every corner of the Queen City."
With an aim to strengthen the creative economy, promote equity, and expand access to arts and culture, the grants span three categories: Operational, Project, and Professional Development. Operational Grants, allocated to 37 recipients, aim to ensure the sustainability of grassroots arts and culture nonprofits; Project Grants, given to 49 entities, are designed to bring to life innovative ideas and community events through individual artists, collectives, and cultural nonprofits; while Professional Development Grants, awarded to 20 individuals, focus on career growth and skill enhancement within Charlotte’s artistic community.
City Manager Marcus D. Jones highlighted the quality and ambition of the applications, noting, "We are thrilled to be able to provide over 100 artists and arts organizations with the funds to bring incredible ideas to life," he claimed, showcasing the vision and passion that make the Charlotte arts and culture ecosystem so strong. Among the beneficiaries are organizations such as ArtPop Street Gallery, Raices Latino Arts, and 7th Street Concerts, which have proven instrumental in driving creative endeavors within the region.
The distribution of grants is strategically aligned with the objectives set forth in the Charlotte Arts and Culture Plan adopted by City Council in 2023. The plan prioritizes deep community engagement and establishes pathways for artists and organizations to prosper.
