The season of giving is upon us, and Clark County Family Services is not taking a backseat in its annual call to the community to ensure children in foster care also have a chance to celebrate. The GIVE JOY Toy and Gift Card Drive, now in its fifteenth year, is on a mission to deliver holiday cheer to some 3,200 children and teenagers who are currently in foster care across Clark County.
"While the holidays bring joy to many families, children in foster care often face uncertainty during what should be the most wonderful time of year," Lisa Martinez, Clark County Family Services Deputy Director said. "GIVE JOY ensures that every child in our care knows they are seen, valued, and loved." According to the county's official website, there's a heightened need for donations suitable for young children, particularly babies, toddlers, and those aged 10-12. With the ongoing economic struggles impacting many families, the contribution from the local community is indispensable.
Contributions can be made in several ways, with Clark County Family Services accepting new, unwrapped toys for the younger age group and gift cards in $25 and $50 increments for teenagers. Donations must be submitted by December 13 to ensure they can be processed in time for the holiday season. Fortunately, local residents looking to help out have various options. They can offer gifts by registering online to collect toys and gift cards or can volunteer time to sort, pack, and distribute the collected items. Financial contributions are also welcome, with a suggested donation of $50 providing a holiday gift for one child in foster care.
Beyond the toy drive, Clark County is reaching out for local heroes to join the ranks of foster families. The current number of licensed foster homes stands at 370, yet the need is for at least 200 more to provide nurturing environments for children and teens facing tumultuous times. There is a particularly urgent call for individuals to become part of the I-CARE network, which offers emergency on-call interim foster care to prevent kids from ending up in the Child Haven emergency shelter. For those interested in bringing more than just holiday joy to a child's life, becoming a foster parent or I-CARE provider may be the most precious gift of all.
