Residents of Cobb County hit the polls yesterday for a range of municipal and state Public Service Commission elections, yet not without a glitch that had one precinct playing catch-up. Cobb's Election officials hustled to set up additional voting machines, staff, and on-site law enforcement at the Thompson Park Community Center, located at 555 Nickajack Road in Mableton. The center, now a shared precinct for voters from Smyrna 7A and Mableton 4C, saw lines stretch as space and parking proved scarce.
Patience was advised for those casting their ballots at Thompson Park, with a promise of smoother sailing as the new resources fell into place. Meanwhile, early risers were stalled at Mt. Bethel Church due to technical woes. To make up for the lost time, a Cobb County Judge ordered this precinct to extend its hours, according to a statement obtained by the Cobb County government, keeping the doors open until 7:35 p.m. instead of the standard close at 7 p.m.
Outside of these hiccups, the November 4 event spanned multiple Cobb County cities, with Smyrna being the solitary exception. On top of that, voters from across the county were eligible to weigh in on two Public Service Commission districts. Voters keen to locate their polling place or to peek at sample ballots could dive into such details via the Cobb Elections website.
Looking ahead, a special election for State Senate District 35 looms on the horizon with a date set for November 18. Advance voting has already kicked off for residents of Smyrna, Vinings, and Mableton. Eligibility and advanced voting locations can be confirmed through the My Voter Page, where a sample ballot awaits the curious voter. Additional information on advance voting stations, availability, and anticipated wait times is comprehensive, available through the Cobb Elections portal.
