Construction on the Route 8 bridge over the Union Pacific Railroad in Washington County has hit a roadblock following a workplace accident that occurred last week. According to MoDOT, a contractor was injured on the job site on Monday, Nov. 10. While the injuries were reported to be non-life-threatening, this incident prompted an immediate response from first responders and resulted in the temporary closure of the roadway. The bridge was reopened later that day, reverting to the existing work zone restrictions.
In the wake of the incident, MoDOT, along with S & A Equipment & Builders and the Union Pacific Railroad, has halted all activity at the construction site to carry out an investigation. The worker, while treated on the scene, was carried away for further medical care, causing work to be suspended. Although it is unclear how long this suspension will last, officials are working diligently to determine the next steps and when the project can resume.
The delay brought by this event will, inevitably, influence the project's timeline, which planned for a traffic shift to facilitate work on the second half of the bridge. The project team has promised to keep the public informed about the resumption of work and any changes to traffic patterns that will follow. Those interested in keeping abreast of updates are encouraged to visit MoDOT's dedicated project page.
MoDOT has taken this opportunity to remind motorists to prioritize safety, particularly in and around work zones. "Motorists are advised to use extra caution through work zones, obey all traffic signs, and avoid any distractions," said a reference to MoDOT's safety guidelines. In addition to staying alert, drivers are advised to adhere to various safety measures like buckling up, keeping their phones down, and being mindful of temporary signals in place.
