
Amid a potential federal suspension of Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) funding, steps are being taken under CEO Lorraine Cochran-Johnson to address food and housing needs. Support is being strengthened for more than 54,000 households that rely on SNAP benefits to maintain access to essential resources in DeKalb County.
The Georgia Department of Human Services has confirmed that SNAP’s federal funding was scheduled to end yesterday, which may lead to benefit disruptions unless Congress takes action. Approximately 127,000 residents rely on this assistance. County Executive Lorraine Cochran-Johnson has highlighted the significance of the situation and sent letters to Washington requesting immediate action, which have been made public.
Efforts are being coordinated across multiple organizations, including DeKalb County Schools and the Housing Authority of DeKalb County, to build a comprehensive system of support. The initiative includes providing students with nutritious school meals and additional assistance, such as food pantries and meal programs, with further details to be announced on Wednesday.
Programs such as the Urban League of Greater Atlanta and the DeKalb Water Rate Assistance Program (WRAP) are providing support to individuals affected by income instability or unemployment, helping eligible families manage water and sewer costs. The Housing Authority has confirmed that approximately $5.2 million from HUD will be available for November Housing Choice Voucher payments, assisting around 6,000 families. E.P. “Pete” Walker, Jr., CEO of the Housing Authority, stated that HUD’s support is expected to continue in the coming months, as per the county’s announcement.
Challenges persist as federal guidelines require all pandemic-related funds to be spent by the end of 2024. Having already allocated substantial amounts from the CARES Act and American Rescue Plan funds toward rent, utility, and food assistance during the pandemic, DeKalb County is seeking extended support to address ongoing needs.
