In Destrehan, St. Charles Parish is now celebrating the successful revamp of its East Bank Bridge Park. Parish President Matthew Jewell, alongside community and industry leaders, marked the occasion with the park's ribbon-cutting ceremony, signifying the completion of extensive renovations to a space long-valued by the community. The renovations are meant to ensure that the park remains a central hub for community gatherings and recreation for years to come.
The upgrades, which took over a decade to come to fruition, aim to significantly enhance the recreational experience for residents. According to a statement by St. Charles Parish, the improvements at East Bank Bridge Park include state-of-the-art synthetic turf infields, a fresh sodded outfield with an irrigation system, and renovations to fences, backstops, and dugouts. Additional amenities have been added to comprehensively round out the park's offerings, giving residents access to new tennis and pickleball courts, a batting cage, and a basketball court.
Funding for this project came from several sources, with Valero St. Charles Refinery's contribution of $500,000 playing a crucial role in the construction of the turf infields. Parish President Matthew Jewell emphasized the community aspect of the project, stating, "This project represents more than just new fields and facilities; it’s about community," highlighting the park's significance beyond mere recreation. The project also benefited from the participation of multiple state and local entities, underscoring a collaborative effort to bring the park's improvements to life.
Local residents have much to look forward to with the launch of the renovated facilities. Director Duane Foret expressed pride in the project, stating, "When we broke ground here last November, we set out to create a facility that matches the passion that our residents have for recreation." The undertaking showcases a successful partnership between local government, state associates, and private supporters to realize a shared vision. Notably, the park now features energy-efficient LED fixtures to minimize its environmental footprint.
The East Bank Bridge Park is currently open to the public and will maintain operational hours from 5:00 a.m. to 10:00 p.m. It represents a significant investment in the region's wellbeing and is set to remain a cherished venue for both personal enjoyment and fostering community bonds.
