In response to the recent cutbacks in SNAP benefits brought on by a federal shutdown, Douglas County is stepping in with a hefty $55,000 for the Feed Douglas Cooperative, which local food pantries across the county run, to support families facing food insecurity right now, according to a Douglas County announcement.
The network, consisting of nine food pantries, already supports around 700 families weekly but this influx of cash comes just in time as they brace for an expected 50% increase in visitors needing sustenance, the cooperative reckons more mouths to feed means more hands needed on deck, they are gearing up for the rush. “The Douglas County Board of Commissioners remains deeply committed to supporting our residents in times of uncertainty,” Dr. Romona Jackson Jones, Chairman of the Douglas County Board of Commissioners, said emphasizing an ongoing commitment to uphold the community through thick and thin, as per the Douglas County website.
A significant chunk of the aid package – $5,000 to put a fine point on it – has been promised from the coffers of District 3 Commissioner Martin Raxton, this donation highlights the commissioners' personal stakes in ensuring the needs of Douglas County citizens are not left unmet. In addition to the allotment for November, a second helping of $50,000 has been authorized for December just in case the federal shutdown lingers and the need for help continues to ride high.
Food assistance is prioritized for Douglas County locals, hence all food parcels are going to be tagged “For Douglas County Citizens,” and would-be recipients are asked to show a valid ID before they can walk away with groceries at their designated pickup spots. The pantries span from Crossroads Church in Douglasville to Your New Best Friend, every link in this chain strengthens the community, ensuring that those facing hunger do not have to do so alone and that their calls for help are answered with action and care.
