Drivers in downtown Houston can expect significant disruptions over the coming months as multiple construction projects are set to reshape the cityscape. The Texas Department of Transportation has alerted the public to a long-term road closure on Chartres Street, beginning November 17 and expected to last until January 15, 2026, as reported by CW39. This closure comes as crews work to install storm sewer boxes, which are part of a larger effort to connect the area's drainage system to a new detention pond near I-69 and Runnels Street.
Parallel to this, Polk Street will shut down between Chartres Street and Avenida de las Americas to facilitate the George R. Brown Convention Center expansion, starting on Wednesday, November 5, as per details from a Click2Houston article. A lone city council vote against the permanent closure of a Polk Street section on October 15 reflected the community's concerns that development projects often benefit at their expense without evenly distributing progress.
Texas Department of Transportation has provided a detour map on their website to aid motorists navigating through downtown Houston, as closures will undoubtedly cause delays. For the better navigation of downtown, the sidewalk on Polk Street between Chartres and Avenida de las Americas will reopen on November 28 to pedestrian and bicycle traffic after Texas Department of Transportation finishes with the ramp closures from I-59 southbound to I-45, which are set from November 14-17 and 21-24, according to Click2Houston.
Upcoming work around Polk Street includes major construction like tearing down the GRB ramp over Polk Street and upgrading water lines. While the construction may cause some temporary inconvenience, it will ultimately improve infrastructure, connectivity, and support future urban development in Houston, as per Click2Houston.
