The Shelby County Sheriff’s Office reported that the single-vehicle accident occurred around 3:50 a.m. on Quito Road, just north of West Union Road. The vehicle left the roadway and struck a culvert. Action News 5 stated that the driver was taken to the hospital with non-critical injuries.

The passenger, a woman, was extricated from the vehicle by the Shelby County Fire Department and transported to Regional One Health in critical condition. She later died from her injuries, according to WREG and an X post from the Shelby County Sheriff’s Office. The identities of those involved have not been released.

The cause of the crash remains under investigation. Authorities temporarily closed the area north of West Union Road during the response and advised drivers to use Wilkinsville Road and Simmons Road as alternate routes. Investigators are asking anyone with information about the crash to contact the Sheriff’s Office.
