The annual Philosophy Career Day at El Paso Community College's (EPCC) Transmountain Campus, held last Wednesday, November 5, was a melding of academia and professional guidance. This initiative is part of EPCC's Quality Enhancement Plan, designed to boost student success through sharpened communications and career exploration. The event, aimed at giving students a clearer sightline on their future possibilities, underscored the college's commitment to guiding its students beyond the classroom and into the realm of career development.

During the event, instructors from the Philosophy Faculty at EPCC laid out a buffet of courses available, advanced degrees, and corresponding career avenues potential philosophy students might embark upon after their time at the community college. Participants were also informed about the array of clubs that the Philosophy Discipline oversees, such as the Philosophy Club, the Eureka Club, and the Mindfulness Club, according to event organizer and Transmountain Philosophy Instructor, Gabriel Camacho. “We wanted to provide students some insight into what studying Philosophy at EPCC is all about and let them know about all the opportunities that they have once they graduate from Community College,” Camacho told EPCC News.

The career-centric gathering did not stand alone as EPCC bridged the gap between college and university by inviting representatives from EPCC Transfer Services and neighboring higher education establishments, including UTEP, NMSU, and Sul Ross State University. This initiative presented students with a view into the seamless transition from associate degrees to bachelor's and beyond. Moreover, the presence of local community organizations like Unlearning Filosofia introduced students to unique, philosophy-centered societal engagement projects.

As a fixture of EPCC's fall semester programming, Philosophy Career Day is set to transition to the Northwest Campus for next year’s event, continuing its mission to enrich the academic journey of philosophy students. The endeavor seeks to affirm the value of philosophy within academic institutions and its transformative potential beyond the ivory towers.
