An incident leading to an individual's apprehension unfolded this past Wednesday when El Paso County Sheriff's deputies were called to a scene of violent confrontation. According to a social media post by El Paso County Sheriff Oscar Ugarte, the altercation occurred in the 700 block of Oxley Street around 2:50 p.m., involving a stabbing.
The suspect, 39-year-old Mario Martinez, reportedly fled to a nearby residence and established a barricade, precipitating a response by the Sheriff's Office SWAT Team and Crisis Negotiation Team. Following a brief standoff, Martinez surrendered and was detained without further incident. The Major Crimes Unit took over the subsequent investigation, detailing the process on social media.
As a result of the confrontation and the swift action by law enforcement, Martinez faced significant charges. Soon after the standoff, he was booked into the El Paso County Jail on charges of Aggravated Assault with a Deadly Weapon. Details surrounding the circumstances of the assault or the victim's condition were not immediately released. It was also noted that no bond was set for Martinez following his arrest.
