El Paso has witnessed its 56th traffic fatality of the year, as confirmed by local authorities in a recent incident involving a vehicle and a pedestrian. According to the El Paso Police Department, on October 24th, a collision at the intersection of Stanton and 7th Avenue resulted in serious injuries for the pedestrian, who has now succumbed to those injuries.
The initial investigation indicated that the driver, identified as Salas, was maneuvering her 2024 Chevrolet Colorado southbound on Stanton Street and made a left turn onto 7th Street, at which point the pedestrian, Escobedo, was crossing and was struck. Escobedo was immediately transported to a local hospital for urgent care. However, on November 1st, the Medical Examiner's Office confirmed that Escobedo had passed away due to the injuries from the crash. "The contributing factor in this collision is Salas' failure to yield the right of way to the pedestrian," as reported by the El Paso Police Department.
This tragic event marks an almost unchanged trend in the city's traffic-related deaths, with last year's count at this same time being 57. It also serves as an unfortunate reminder of the perpetual need for vigilance and adherence to traffic laws by both drivers and pedestrians in El Paso streets. The police's Special Traffic Investigations unit continues to investigate the specifics of the collision, as the community reflects on yet another life lost in preventable circumstances.
