Evanston Mayor Daniel Biss confirmed an open investigation into the federal agents' use of force is underway, with accounts detailing the agents employing pepper spray and arresting three U.S. citizens for "violence against law enforcement."
The Halloween operation, which occurred steps away from Chute Middle School, has sent ripples of concern throughout the community, prompting Evanston to enact a policy ensuring police supervision during incidents involving federal agents. "They are doing the opposite of what they think they are,” Evanston City Clerk Stephanie Mendoza told Chicago Sun-Times, indicating a growing sentiment against heavy-handed immigration operations.
During the intervention, which Mayor Biss described to the gathered crowd at the vigil as an attack on the neighborhood, the community's resilience and solidarity came into sharp focus – echoing his statement, "And Evanston showed up." U.S. Rep. Jan Schakowsky, along with local leaders, admonished the tactics used by federal agents, especially as the affluent suburb is seen as a sanctuary for immigrant communities, according to accounts provided at the vigil.
Residents showed their support, with some, like Elliott and Robyn Hurtig, displaying a Mexican flag in defiance of what they consider federal aggression in their “very peaceful, livable community," as Robyn Hurtig explained to the Chicago Sun-Times.
