A predawn crash on the Travis Boulevard overpass of Interstate 80 in Fairfield left one person dead today and ended with a local man in handcuffs on suspicion of driving under the influence, authorities said.
The collision happened just before 1:30 AM in the westbound lanes near the eastbound off-ramp, and crews shut down portions of the overpass well into the morning commute. The victim has not yet been publicly identified.
According to CBS Sacramento, officers identified the driver as 35-year-old Fairfield resident Kyle Dolcee and arrested him on suspicion of DUI. The outlet reported that all lanes were back open by about 6:30 AM.
Charges and legal context
Investigators plan to forward their findings, including toxicology results, to the Solano County district attorney, who will decide whether to file criminal charges. In California, prosecutors can pursue felony counts such as gross vehicular manslaughter while intoxicated under Penal Code section 191.5 when a death is alleged to result from impaired driving.
According to Justia, the jury instruction known as CALCRIM No. 590 outlines the elements that prosecutors must prove for that offense.
Traffic and local enforcement
The crash tangled traffic along I-80, briefly shut the eastbound Travis Boulevard off-ramp, and slowed drivers trying to get through Fairfield as investigators documented the scene.
The incident comes as Fairfield police have been ramping up impaired-driving enforcement. A recent local report detailed the department's plans for a targeted DUI checkpoint on North Texas Street aimed at catching risky drivers before they cause serious crashes.
What comes next
Fairfield police have asked anyone with information or video of the collision to contact the department, according to CBS Sacramento. The investigation is ongoing, and authorities say they will release additional details as they become available.
