A San Francisco homeowner in Mission Dolores was robbed of about $11 million in cryptocurrency early Saturday morning after a thief posing as a delivery worker allegedly pulled a gun, tied up the resident with duct tape, and fled with digital assets, a laptop, and a phone. Police are investigating but have released little information so far.
How Investigators Say The Theft Unfolded
The robbery took place around 6:45 a.m. Saturday at a home near 18th and Dolores streets, according to the San Francisco Chronicle, which reviewed a police report. Investigators say the suspect used a delivery-person ruse to get the resident to open the door, then revealed a firearm, restrained the victim with duct tape, and took off with the devices and the cryptocurrency, according to the report.
Why Crypto Holders Are Being Targeted
Criminals have increasingly shifted from online-only hacks to in-person shakedowns of cryptocurrency holders, and analysts say these physical coercion cases, sometimes called "wrench attacks," have become more common alongside big exchange hacks and wallet-level thefts. Chainalysis's 2025 analysis found record inflows to illicit addresses and a growing share of thefts tied to individual wallets.
Case Status And Next Steps
The incident report did not indicate whether the victim was injured or whether any arrests had been made. The paper reports that SFPD did not immediately respond to requests for comment, and attempts to reach the person listed in public records as the homeowner were not successful. The case remains under investigation.
