A fatal collision in Phoenix has claimed the life of a man after a driver allegedly ran a red light on Saturday evening. ABC15 reports that the incident occurred near 27th Avenue and Buckeye Road, where Phoenix police responded around 7:30 p.m. Upon arrival, they discovered two vehicles involved in the crash and both drivers suffering from serious injuries.
The injured men were transported to a local hospital, where 32-year-old Juan Pineda Ventura later succumbed to his injuries. As of Sunday night, the second driver, who has not been named, remains in the hospital, according to ABC15. The preliminary investigation by police suggests Pineda Ventura was crossing 27th Avenue on a green light, heading eastbound on Buckeye Road, when the other man reportedly barreled through a red light, colliding with his car.
Speed has been identified as a contributing factor to the fatal crash, and impairment has not been ruled out. "Charging decisions related to this investigation will be decided once toxicology results are available and the accident reconstruction process is complete," Phoenix police revealed in a statement obtained by 12News. The outcome of these results could lead to charges against the surviving driver.
