Early this morning, a devastating fire claimed a life at a mobile home in Mashpee. The Mashpee Fire Department crews were dispatched to the scene at Lot 86 Nathan Ellis Highway near Lakeside Trailer Park, as WHDH reports. They received the call around 3:19 a.m. and when they arrived, they found themselves struggling to quickly gain access to the mobile home due to the intensity of the flames.
Despite attempts to search and rescue, the operation was "significantly hindered" by the severe conditions inside the structure. According to Boston 25 News, Mashpee Fire Chief Joseph Peltier stated that the efforts of the firefighters were dramatically impeded by limited access, and heavy smoke. Firefighters eventually were able to remove someone from the residence, but tragically, resuscitative efforts were not successful and the victim was pronounced dead at the scene.
The cause of the blaze is currently under investigation, with Massachusetts State Police and the State Fire Marshal's office providing assistance. State Fire Marshal Jon M. Davine remarked on the absence of smoke alarms being heard upon the fire crews' arrival, which could have been a critical warning sign in preventing the tragedy. Responders had to cut a hole in the wall to enter the residence, indicating the urgency and difficulty of the situation.
Identifying who was taken from the flames has yet to be disclosed as authorities continue to work through the details of this incident. More information about this ongoing investigation is expected to be released as it becomes available.
