On Monday, a destructive fire broke out at 72 Main Street in downtown Milford, severely damaging several residences and the popular Turtle Tavern. Authorities said the building is considered a “total loss,” after flames spread quickly through the structure, as reported by CBS News Boston.
According to CBS News Boston, the fire began around 4:30 p.m. when smoke was seen coming from a wood stove in one of the apartments. “It’s always very sad when we have local business owners and residents losing their place to live and people losing their livelihoods,” said Milford Fire Chief Mark Nelson.
Chief Nelson said the firefighting operation was “It was very labor intensive” because of water supply problems that required crews to connect hoses to other hydrants, as mentioned by Boston 25 News. The fire station’s resources were limited due to another incident on the interstate. Local business owner Anna Peniche said, “Milford will come together and help rebuild it,” noting that the Turtle Tavern had supported community events and fundraisers, as per CBS News Boston. The Massachusetts state fire marshal is investigating the cause of the fire.
