Fort Lauderdale residents and motorists should brace for a lengthy construction project aimed at shoring up the city's drainage system. Stretching from Broward Boulevard to Sunrise Boulevard along NW 7th Avenue, the Highway and Bridge Maintenance Division is set to begin necessary repairs starting Wednesday, November 12. As noted in a Broward County announcement, if all goes according to plan and Mother Nature cooperates, the project will wrap up by August 10, 2026.
While these types of infrastructure repairs can wreak havoc on daily commutes, the county aims to lessen the burden by conducting work nocturnally. Officials have confirmed that during construction, traffic will not be completely disrupted, maintaining one open lane in each direction on NW 7th Avenue. That said, temporary blockades will hopscotch across several side streets, disturbing traffic for short spells. Diversions will steer impacted drivers around these zones, trying their best not to turn the area into a vehicular maze, as detailed on the county's website.
Businesses and pedestrians in the area can breathe a little easier knowing their access to driveways and sidewalks won't be cut off during the construction period. To keep everyone informed and as unhampered as possible, variable message signs are set to be posted, providing real-time updates and guidance through the affected corridors.
Funded by the gas tax, this initiative is a part of the larger push to maintain and improve Fort Lauderdale's aging infrastructure.
