In a partnership between Building Homes for Heroes, Lowe's, and the Town of Mooresville, a groundbreaking event was held on Veterans Day to mark the start of a new community development for veterans and first responders. Known as Freedom Hill, this community aims to provide more than just housing; it represents a life of security and hope for those who have served. According to a press release from the Town of Mooresville, the project is set to accommodate approximately 15 homes for veterans, with plans to further impact the lives of veterans through a comprehensive support system.
The initiative is not just about brick and mortar—it extends to offer wraparound care addressing specific needs that veterans and first responders often face. Building Homes for Heroes has set itself ambitious goals to deliver 50 homes in 2025 and reach its milestone of 500 homes before the end of 2026. As Andy Pujol, Founder, and CEO of Building Homes for Heroes, stated, "Every day is Veterans Day" for the organization, which is committed to restoring hope and independence for the nation's heroes.
Funded partially by Lowe's and its customer-supported 'Round-Up for Charity' campaign, Freedom Hill exemplifies a successful public-private partnership. The land for the community was donated by the Town of Mooresville, further underlying the collaborative spirit of the initiative. Lowe's involvement adds a personal note to the project as Mooresville is not only the company's hometown but also a place where it has long valued and honored the service of the nation's military members.
Local government also played a vital role in this project. Over the span of 14 months, Mooresville's Mayor Chris Carney worked closely with the North Carolina General Assembly to help make this innovative community possible. The groundbreaking ceremony was a significant moment, bringing together community members to honor those who have dedicated to serve the nation. According to Mayor Carney, the development is a "generational tribute" to the courage and selflessness of veterans.
The groundwork for Freedom Hill followed the annual Veterans Day Parade in Mooresville and featured a ceremonial beginning with distinguished guests, including Pujol and Gulf War Veteran Joe McFarland, Executive Vice President of Stores at Lowe's.
