A Saturday afternoon at the Hollywood Theater in Northeast Portland turned from an ordinary movie experience into a safety concern when a suspected gas leak led to the evacuation of nearly 400 moviegoers. According to KATU, the initial emergency call was received around 1:45 p.m., with Portland Fire & Rescue taking swift action to clear the theater and block off Sandy Boulevard for safety precautions.
Amidst the concern, a fire official had to assure the audience, moments before the screening of "RRR," that the gas leak was serious despite initial laughter from the crowd, as chronicled by a journalist at the scene for The Oregonian/OregonLive. The incident eerily shadows a previous gas leak from almost a decade ago in Northwest Portland, which resulted in a significant explosion, causing injuries and property damage.
Responding firefighters, upon arrival at the iconic venue that first opened in 1926, promptly cut off the gas flow and searched for the leak's origin. As reported by KATU, gas concentrations inside the theater measured 35 parts per million but decreased after ventilating the building through natural means as well as employing fans to push any lingering gas to the exterior.
The closure of Northeast Sandy Boulevard added a temporary disruption to local traffic, although the road was reopened and the Hollywood Theater was able to resume its scheduled screenings later in the day. The all-clear was shared via the theater's social media, detailed in a report by KPTV, signaling the return to normalcy after a moment of unnerving disruption.
