Gaston County is bracing for a busy week with a variety of events designed to cater to the community's diverse interests, starting with the commemoration of Veterans Day and culminating in a festive flannel throwback on Saturday night. According to the official Gaston County government website, the county officeswas closed yesterday, in observance of Veterans Day. On the same day, Dallas hosted a parade at 11am to honor and celebrate military veterans. The parade will take place at the Dallas Historic Courthouse, marking an opportunity for residents to pay tribute to those who have served.
Later in the week, the community can shift its focus to protecting the youngest among us, as The Lighthouse offers a free training event tomorrow. The "Darkness to Light, Stewards of Children Training" is aimed squarely at arming adults with the skills to prevent, recognize, and react responsibly to child sexual abuse. The session, which starts at 9 am, is reported to be an evidence-informed approach that will last approximately 2.5 hours.
As the week progresses, the Gastonia Farmers Market invites locals to come down on Saturday from 7:30am to 12:30pm to indulge in locally harvested produce, fresh meats, and artisanal goods. But if you're a fan of literature, another treat awaits that same day. Dixie Abernathy, a local author, will be discussing the final book in her best-selling "Cramerton: A Trilogy" series at 11am in the Main Library's Carol K. Reinhardt Auditorium, according to the county's public library announcement.
As the week draws to a close, Cramerton takes the stage with its Flannel Fest on Saturday. The event, which runs from 5 to 9 pm at the Centennial Center, promises to deliver a 90's and 00's nostalgia rush with tribute bands, axe throwing, and for the first time this year, a mechanical bull to test your rodeo skills on. As well as music and thrill rides, the festival will serve up eats from local food trucks and craft brews. Contest categories include Best Flannel Outfit and Most Clashing Flannel, with a special addition for pet owners to show off their pets in flannel finery. Attendees are encouraged to dress in their "flannel best" for a chance to win.
Whether you're looking to honor veterans, learn valuable skills to protect children, support local farmers and craftsmen, dive into local literature, or simply enjoy a retro-flavored festival, Gaston County has something to offer everyone this week. Remember to get out there and enjoy what your community events have in store.
