The Georgia Bureau of Investigation (GBI) is investigating an officer-involved shooting in Crisp County that resulted in the death of 25-year-old Deonte Rashad Calhoun. According to the Georgia Bureau of Investigation release, the Crisp County Sheriff’s Office had been attempting to locate Calhoun, a Tifton resident, who was wanted on four counts of aggravated assault.
Deputies found Calhoun on Friday last week while he was driving through Cordele and attempted a traffic stop. Calhoun left his vehicle and fled on foot, leading to a pursuit. During the chase, gunfire was exchanged, and Calhoun died at the scene. No deputies were injured. Preliminary findings from the Georgia Bureau of Investigation indicate that Calhoun may have died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound.
The Georgia Bureau of Investigation has notified Calhoun’s family of the initial findings. The investigation is ongoing, and once completed, the case file will be provided to the Cordele Judicial Circuit District Attorney’s Office for review. Anyone with information is asked to contact the Regional Investigative Office in Americus or submit anonymous tips through the hotline or mobile app.
