In an effort to mitigate the impacts of the ongoing federal shutdown, which includes disruptions to vital SNAP benefits, Hawaiʻi has initiated the Kōkua Food Drive. This weeklong campaign, which began yesterday and continues through Friday, is a collaborative effort between the Hawaiʻi State Public Library System and local food banks to assist families across the state who are currently experiencing food scarcity.
The food drive is taking place during each participating library's regular business hours at all public library branches, with the exception of Kāne‘ohe, Wahiawā, and Lāhainā. According to a statement made by Hawaiʻi Public Libraries, the community is encouraged to donate canned and other nonperishable food items. Alongside these physical donations, monetary contributions are also accepted and greatly appreciated; these can be made directly via the Hawaii Foodbank website.
For those who can't make it to the library but still wish to contribute, online donations are an easy and impactful way to provide support. The funds collected will be distributed among the Hawaiʻi Foodbank, Maui Food Bank, The Food Basket, and their affiliates, ensuring a breadth of coverage across the multiple islands to reach families most in need of assistance.
