Just before Veteran’s Day celebrations kick off, Attorney General Kwame Raoul has turned the spotlight on recent upgrades to legislation that distinctly affect those who've served. Changes have been made to the Illinois Service Member Employment and Reemployment Rights Act (ISERRA), offering a beefed-up set of protections for service members’ civilian careers when duty calls. These updates, which were passed by the Illinois General Assembly back in August, aim to seamlessly integrate military obligations with civilian employment.

The Illinois Attorney General's Office is slated to hold an open house on Monday, Nov. 10, from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m. for service members, veterans, and their families. The event, designed to formally introduce the ISERRA updates and provide insight into additional resources, will take place at the new west regional office in Eisenhower Tower, according to a recent update. “The least we can do is protect their rights and their civilian careers when they answer that call,” Raoul said, emphasizing the importance of backing our service members.

Key changes to ISERRa include a shift from a "workday" system to a "work shift" system, making life easier for those who slog through overnight shifts. There's also the offering of concurrent compensation for service members who fulfill "in lieu" training orders—previously, financial support was only available for annual training orders. Wrapping up the amendments is the termination of an employer's obligation to pay differential compensation for voluntary active service extending beyond three years. This move effectively seals a loophole that enabled ongoing payments even when reemployment was no longer certain.

In addition to the legislative refresh, Raoul's Military and Veterans’ Rights Bureau persists in offering support through educational programs. The dedicated ISERRA advocate plays a pivotal role, offering information and, if need be, initiating investigations to ensure that service members' rights are not just upheld but respected. For those looking to grasp the full spectrum of their rights or to become savvy against fraud targeting veterans, resources are readily available, per the Attorney General's website.

The office extends an open invitation to service members and veterans eager to better comprehend their employment rights or seeking assistance. They are encouraged to reach out to the Military and Veterans’ Rights Helpline at 800-382-3000 or by emailing [email protected]. With Veterans Day on the horizon, these updated acts and resources are ready to serve those who've served, ensuring their civilian life continues to march steadily onward alongside their military commitments.
