Indiana's Medicaid landscape is set to change with the Indiana Family and Social Services Administration (FSSA) announcing the end of its contract with MDwise, a key managed health care plan for Medicaid recipients in the state. According to WTHR, the decision followed a review of MDwise's service performance and its ability to meet the "standards for member services, provider support, and program accountability."
The shift is expected to significantly impact both service recipients and employees of MDwise. As Indiana's only provider-led and nonprofit Medicaid managed care plan, MDwise serves more than 300,000 Hoosiers and employs over 230 residents. FOX59 highlights concerns that the termination could lead to healthcare disruption and job losses, given the significant role MDwise plays in the local health insurance market.
The FSSA, in a news release captured by WISH TV, insists that the decision to terminate MDwise from the Indiana Medicaid programs was rooted in a rigorous evaluation process. MDwise has yet to fully publicly outline their plan to manage the transition for their customers and staff. However, the company signaled clearly the depth of the anticipated effects.
According to FOX59, MDwise described the state's decision as set to "lead to healthcare distruption" and watershed for "hundreds losing jobs." The contract termination is set to take effect at the start of the year, leaving little time for patients and employees to adapt to the upcoming changes.
