Jefferson Parish drivers are in for a bit of a detour starting this week, as all lanes of Edwards Avenue at Mounes Street will be shut down until late April 2026. The closure, beginning at 6 a.m. yesterday, is going to persist through 10 p.m. Thursday, Apr. 30, 2026, to allow for drainage and roadway work, according to an announcement by Jefferson Parish officials.
For motorists usually traveling southbound on Edwards Avenue, the detour will route them east on Powell Street to Elmwood Park Boulevard, and finally to Mounes Street. Meanwhile, those driving northbound will have to, albeit reluctantly, reroute east on Mounes Street to Distributor’s ROW, then westward on Powell Street to circle back to Edwards Avenue. These changes are set to complicate the daily commute, but with the promise of an enhanced road network once the work concludes.
The closure is part of a drainage and roadway improvement project aimed at maintaining and upgrading local infrastructure. Parish officials said the work is necessary to address long-term traffic and flooding concerns and advised motorists to plan for potential delays throughout the construction period.
They've urged community members to be patient and follow the signed detour routes. While traffic adjustments can often prove to be a testing time for drivers, the county assures that these improvements are necessary to safeguard and enhance the transportation pathways for the future. Work on the project is expected "to be completed by Thursday, Apr. 30, 2026, weather permitting," as per Jefferson Parish.
Residents and drivers in the area are encouraged to stay updated on the road closur e and any potential changes to the project timeline by checking Jefferson Parish's official announcements.
