The City of El Paso has confirmed that Joe Montisano's tenure as El Paso Zoo Director has come to an end. According to a statement released on Thursday—featured in a KTSM report—the City expressed its intention to "wish Mr. Montisano, the best in his future endeavors."
Montisano's departure follows his placement on temporary administrative leave in September, as reported by ABC-7. The leave had initially been communicated to zoo management by the assistant director, yet the specific reasons why were not disclosed at that time. Assistant Director Gary Lunsford has been named interim director and is set to ensure the uninterrupted operation of the zoo facilities.
Further details surrounding Montisano's resignation surfaced amidst a backdrop of multiple controversies. Previously, in March, an ex-employee filed a sexual harassment lawsuit, alleging a lack of action from Montisano and a human resources employee, as outlined in KFOX-TV's article. In another instance, the City of El Paso ended a six-decade partnership with the Conservation Society of El Paso last year.
While the search for a new permanent director commences, Montisano's resignation has been officially noted by City Spokesperson Laura Cruz-Acosta, “We want to take this opportunity to wish Mr. Montisano, the best in his future endeavors," Cruz-Acosta stated through ABC-7. This search is part of an effort to move past the recent events and chart a new course for zoo leadership. It underscores a period of transition and reassessment for the well-known El Paso attraction.
