Major car manufacturers Kia and Hyundai are facing a serious recall due to a defect that could lead to fuel tank meltdowns, risking vehicle fires. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has highlighted that approximately 250,000 Kia K5 sedans, spanning the 2021-2024 model years, are subject to this recall, as reported by CBS News Miami. The NHTSA warns that a damaged check valve meant to regulate air inside the fuel tank may expand upon air entry, potentially contacting the hot exhaust system, leading to the melting of the fuel tank.

Similarly, according to Morningstar, Hyundai's recall involves more than 85,000 vehicles, specifically Sonata models manufactured between 2020 and 2023, the affected vehicles are subject to a similar defect involving the fuel tank's check valve, which causes air to be suck into the fuel tank that can result in serious hazards. Authorized dealers are set to inspect and, if necessary, replace these check valves and fuel tanks at no charge to owners to mitigate the risk of fire.

Vehicle owners can be vigilant for signs of the defect, which may include a popping sound from the fuel tank area, active check engine lights on the dashboard, or experiencing the car running in a less than smooth manner, as detailed by the NHTSA.

The agencies have not yet reported any related accidents or injuries; however, both Kia and Hyundai are taking preemptive actions to resolve this issue. To address the identified hazards, Kia dealers will replace the faulty valves and, contingent upon inspection results, the fuel tank itself, "The fuel tank will be inspected for damage and replaced as necessary. All repairs will be performed free of charge," according to an announcement made by the NHTSA and echoed by CBS News Miami. Hyundai will conduct similar repairs on their affected vehicles, demonstrating a concerted effort by both companies to prioritize consumer safety in light of this potentially dangerous defect.

Owners of the potentially impacted vehicles will be notified by the manufacturers to arrange for the necessary inspections and repairs; further customer information regarding recall specifics can be obtained from Kia and Hyundai's respective customer service or from the NHTSA's recall website.
