In his latest announcement, Kingsport Mayor Paul W. Montgomery unveiled a new task force focused on reviving the economic fortunes of the MeadowView Conference Resort and Convention Center. During a worksession with the Board of Mayor and Aldermen, which took place on Monday afternoon, Montgomery championed the move as part of the board's responsibility to ensure the prudent use of taxpayer dollars. "Reviewing and setting a course for MeadowView to be successful for decades to come is an act of good governance and one we take seriously," Montgomery said, as reported by the official City of Kingsport website.
The necessity for this task force comes in the wake of financial struggles faced by the MeadowView property since 2020. The Mayor, having keenly felt the importance of the issue, has rallied a diverse group of residents and local leaders from different sectors for the task force, including those from Visit Kingsport and prominent organizations like Eastman as well as representatives from financial and healthcare institutions. Charged with creating a vision for both the MeadowView facility and the broader Kingsport community, the team looks poised to evaluate historical, current, and future uses of all portions of the property.
This new task force is not working in isolation, as they will collaborate with city staff to assess and enhance the financial and operational aspects of the MeadowView site. Their mandate includes delivering a thorough review and producing well-informed recommendations by evaluating and identifying barriers to community access and local use. They will also have to define the mission of the city's portion of MeadowView, ensuring that whatever path they propose, it aligns with the overarching interests of Kingsport's citizens.
Opened in 1996, the MeadowView Conference Resort and Convention Center, with its significant 81,000 square feet, has served a multitude of functions including meetings, banquets, and trade shows, not to mention the adjoining amenities like the 300-room hotel, golf course, and restaurant. Despite these versatile offerings, it's been no secret since 2020 the venue has been treading an unsustainable financial path, contributing to the decision to form the task force.
