In a bid to increase the infrastructure for electric vehicles, the City of Las Cruces is calling on local businesses to take part in a landmark grant opportunity. As the demand for electric vehicle (EV) charging stations continues to soar, this cooperative venture aims to ensure that the municipality keeps pace with the green revolution sweeping the nation's roadways. According to the City of Las Cruces, business owners can apply to host cutting-edge Direct Current Fast Charging (DCFC) equipment through the National Electric Vehicle Infrastructure (NEVI) program, backed by the New Mexico Department of Transportation.
The city's invitation underscores the importance of strategic placement for these charging stations. By partnering with businesses along the bustling corridors of US-70 and I-10, the presence of these chargers can leverage high-traffic locations to serve EV drivers. Potential applicants must send in a narrative detailing their qualifications, which include providing 24/7 public access, dedicated EV parking spaces, and essential on-site amenities. Despite the critical need for such services being highlighted, the initiative clearly puts the onus on proper site visibility and ease of public accessibility that can make or break the viability of an EV charging location.
Businesses that are interested in joining forces with the city must adhere to a range of requirements, as specified by the city's request for proposals. The NEVI grant covers various costs ranging from purchasing the charging equipment to related infrastructure enhancements. The program not only emphasizes the need for robust electrical capabilities but also considers considerations like adequate lighting and cellular service coverage for the proposed sites.
Applications for this partnership must be submitted by 6 p.m. MST on November 24, providing interested entities a narrow window to craft and refine their proposals. Alongside the narrative, applicants are encouraged to include photos or an informal sketch of the proposed site, which can demonstrate preparedness. After the review process, scheduled for completion by December 4, selected partners will be notified promptly the next day, as detailed by the City of Las Cruces. However, the quick turnaround for the notification of successful applicants hardly reflects the comprehensive preparation needed to put forth a competitive application.
