Time is running out for Mecklenburg County homeowners looking to secure a financial boost from the Helping Out Mecklenburg homeowners with Economic Support (HOMES) program. With the November 21 deadline looming, eligible residents still have a narrow window to apply for grants that could help ease monetary pressures.
Since its roll out on July 1, the HOMES program has been a beacon for nearly 9,000 applicants who have benefited from more than $2.6 million in grants. Homeowners can receive up to $650, and those in Davidson might snag an additional $534, turning a simple application into significant savings. As Community Services Manager Shakirah Francis put it, “Filling out a simple application could save you hundreds of dollars.” Those words, sourced from Mecklenburg County's news release, highlight the potential impact of the program on individual finances.
The criteria for applicants is straightforward: you must have lived in your home for a minimum of three years, meet a set income threshold, and have a relatively clean tax bill over the past three years. Contrary to what some might assume, the program doesn't exclude based on age, mortgage status, or whether you receive public assistance – making it accessible to a diverse group of homeowners.
A streamlined, one-page application process is designed for easy submission via several channels – online, email, or mail. All details can be found at the county’s official HOMES program page. Completed forms can be emailed to [email protected], or for those who prefer paper, applications are accepted at various drop-off sites across the county, including the Valerie C. Woodard and Ella B. Scarborough Community Resource Centers. Just remember, all submissions must be postmarked no later than November 21.
Whether you're a new applicant or a previous recipient, seize this opportunity to shore up your financial standing as the year comes to a close.
