Long Beach Airport is gearing up for a substantial makeover, with a $37 million plan to modernize the passenger concourse announced ahead of the 2028 Los Angeles Olympic and Paralympic Games. The Long Beach City Council gave the green light for this substantial investment, passing the motion with a unanimous vote during an Oct. 14 meeting, as reported by the City of Long Beach Government's press release.
With eyes set on the future, the aim is to refine the traveler's experience while also creating nearly 200 local jobs. "Our award-winning Airport is one of the best in the nation, offering travelers a uniquely Long Beach experience," said Mayor Rex Richardson, emphasizing that the initiative will showcase the city’s hospitality. Upgrades will cover an array of improvements, from better circulation and seating options to mechanical and electrical enhancements that include a much-needed replacement of air-conditioning components and restroom renovations.
The makeover will focus on the post-security area, anticipated to start later this year and be wrapped up by 2027, well before the international influx for the Olympics. Operations won't be hampered, as commercial flights and gate access will be maintained throughout the construction phase. "This refresh is not just aesthetic — it’s about expanding LGB’s reputation as a premier airport that offers travelers an experience that is distinctly Long Beach," added Fifth District Councilwoman Megan Kerr.
Financial backing to propel this project is secured, with $24 million coming from the Federal Aviation Administration under the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act. Congressman Robert Garcia, a former Mayor of Long Beach, noted the significance of the airport to the local economy and the broader community. "This investment will modernize our Airport to make it more sustainable, safer and efficient for years to come," he stated, highlighting the positive ripple effects such as reinforcing businesses and good job creation.
The economic impact of Long Beach Airport is already substantial, given its role in producing an estimated $9 billion in annual output and supporting 42,000 jobs. Recognized as one of the nation's top airports for its ambiance and service, it currently delivers nonstop flights to 21 destinations with wide-reaching connections that span over 400 cities worldwide through several airlines.
