Integrated logistics giant Maersk has made a definitive move, selecting Mecklenburg County as its new North American headquarters and promising the creation of 520 new jobs in the region. President of Maersk's North America Region, Charles van der Steene, expressed the company's enthusiasm for solidifying Charlotte's role in their narrative, a relationship that has spanned more than 20 years. "Charlotte has been an important part of our story here at Maersk for over two decades, and we’re proud to now make it our official North America headquarters location," Maersk reported.
The logistics firm, which has been part of the Charlotte community since purchasing its current space in south Charlotte in 2006, is set to invest $16 million into this expansion. The bolstered workforce will exceed 1,300 employees, with the headquarters supporting key operations such as finance, human resources, and technology. Maersk's choice, is a reflection of Charlotte's infrastructure and skilled labor pool—factors crucial to the company's growth over the years. "The city’s strong infrastructure and talented workforce have helped drive our growth over the years, " van der Steene told the press.
Mecklenburg County officials have praised the decision, seeing it as a confirmation of the area's global commerce clout. Mark Jerrell, Chair of the Mecklenburg Board of County Commissioners, pointed out the expected economic ripple effect. "This announcement demonstrates the strength of our talented workforce, expands opportunities for our residents, and will spin off even more small businesses in the future,” he mentioned during the announcement. Additionally, Charlotte Mayor Vi Lyles highlighted the increasing roster of global brands that establish their bases in the city. "With global connectivity, a talented workforce and an exceptional quality of life, Charlotte is an ideal place for leading brands to put down roots and grow," Lyles said.
The move is expected to open positions across diverse levels of expertise, with some roles not necessitating a college degree. With an average wage of $100,962, jobs at Maersk's new headquarters promise to pay well above the regional average. The Danish-owned company, established in 1904 and a subsidiary of the Fortune Global 500 A.P. Moller-Maersk, has grown into a significant logistics and supply chain partner. It employs over 10,000 individuals in North America and approximately 100,000 worldwide. North Carolina Governor Josh Stein captured the sentiment of this growth, expressing his pride in welcoming Maersk to "the top state for business in the country," a nod to the state's reputed workforce and business-friendly environment.
Charlotte's recent job announcement surge, with over 4,100 new positions and $438 million in capital investment, places the city among the top national contenders for corporate headquarters. The city's strategic collaborations have seen tech firms like Scout Motors, Pacific Life Insurance Co., and SoFi Technologies also expanding or relocating to the locale. As the second-best city in the nation for headquarters as per a recent survey by Site Selection magazine, Charlotte's blend of connectivity, talent, and quality of life seems to be creating a magnet for business innovation and expansion.
